Ingredients
  

  • 4 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 packet active dry yeast (2 ¼ teaspoons)
  • 1.5 cups warm water (about 110°F / 43°C)
  • 1 tablespoon granulated sugar
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • cup baking soda (for boiling)
  • coarse sea salt (for sprinkling)
  • 1 egg egg (for egg wash)

  • Prepare the Yeast Mixture: In a bowl, combine warm water, sugar, and yeast. Let it sit for about 5-10 minutes until frothy.
  • Make the Dough: In a large mixing bowl, combine the flour and salt. Add the yeast mixture to the flour and mix until a dough forms.
  • Knead the Dough: Transfer the dough to a floured surface and knead for about 5-7 minutes until smooth and elastic.
  • Let It Rise: Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover with a damp cloth, and let it rise in a warm place for about 1 hour or until doubled in size.
  • Prepare the Boiling Solution: In a large pot, bring about 10 cups of water to a boil. Add the baking soda carefully (it will bubble up).
  • Shape the Pretzels: Punch down the risen dough and divide it into 10 equal pieces. Roll each piece into a long rope (about 20 inches), twist into a pretzel shape, and pinch the ends to seal.
  • Boil the Pretzels: Carefully drop each shaped pretzel into the boiling water for about 30 seconds. Remove with a slotted spoon and place on a greased baking sheet.
  • Egg Wash: Beat the egg and brush it over the pretzels. Sprinkle with coarse sea salt or any desired toppings.
  • Bake: Preheat your oven to 425°F (220°C). Bake the pretzels for 12-15 minutes or until golden brown.
  • Cool and Enjoy: Let the pretzels cool on a wire rack for a few minutes before serving.
